Windows 10

Windows 10 Enterprise Edition is approved for use in USGS.

Last updated: March 21, 2023 at 8:43 am PDT

Beginning March 21, 2023, the Bureau Windows Technical Support Team (BWTST) is pleased to announce the approval of Microsoft Windows 10 22H2 for use as the new standard Windows OS for USGS.

Beginning with 21H2, Microsoft moved to an annual Feature Update release each fall. As DOI was supporting only a single update per year, there is no functional change to the model of supporting only the annual Fall Feature Update for Windows 10.

Enterprise Deployment Information can be found here.

On August 1, 2015, Microsoft® released Windows 10 for Enterprise customers.

With the Windows 10 Enterprise Edition, available channels for delivering updates include Windows Insider Program, Current Branch (CB), Current Branch for Business (CBB), and Long-Term Servicing Branch (LTSB). USGS should be installing the CBB version for their Windows 10 clients, as this is the version that has been fully tested and vetted. LTSB is only permitted with approval for limited business requirements.

Beginning in late March 2023, sites should only install version 22H2.   Please do not install any other versions of Windows Client OS until they are tested and approved.

Systems running Windows 10 versions previous to Feature Update 22H2 will need to be updated by May 31, 2023. On June 1, 2023, any version of Windows 10 older than 22H2 will be considered End of Life (EOL) and automatically disabled via nightly scripts to support the USGS OS standardization.
