Create/update system and technical descriptions for A&A due November 23, 2015

November 23, 2015

As a reminder, the first activity, Information System Security Categorization was due yesterday (Nov. 9, 2015).
Please remember to send email to gs-i_ana@usgs.gov after posting the document.

The second activity is ‘Create/update system and technical descriptions’, due November 23, 2015.

Accurate system and technical descriptions for USGS Systems and Science & Support Systems (S&SS) Assets play a critical role in the risk management framework, also called Assessment and Authorization (A&A). The system description provides an understanding of the function and purpose of systems and services within the System or S&SS Asset boundaries. The technical description consists of a network architectural diagram.
In support of USGS FY16 compliance activities, the Information Security Office is requiring all Systems and S&SS Assets to review and update or create new system and technical descriptions by November 23, 2015.
In order to complete this activity, S&SS Asset Security Managers (ASM) should:
• Download system and technical description template available at http://internal.usgs.gov/oei/security/docs/USGS_System_Technical_Description_Template_v1.1.docx
o Use this template to document both system and technical descriptions;
 S&SS Assets, please note your existing Business Impact Analysis (BIA) and Information System Contingency Plans (ISCP) may already have system and/or technical description information. Please feel free to use this information in the new template, but update the BIA and the ISCP after to ensure consistency of information.
o Upload completed system and technical description document(s) to your ‘FY16 Activities’ folder on the A&A SharePoint portal; and
o Send email to gs-i_ana@usgs.gov
The Information Security Office will review the completed description documents after November 23, 2015 and work with ASMs to revise or adjust as needed.
Please send any additional questions or concerns to gs-i_ana@usgs.gov.
